Cedar Grove Labyrinth of Thornbury

The Cedar Grove Labyrinth has recently been erected with the hopes of promoting reflection and relaxation for its community members and visitors. Given the history of Labyrinths, it is an excellent teaching tool for students to learn the importance of personal and psychological transformation and growth. This site also offers a pause in the work day,  as well as simply a time to find peace and relaxation. The Cedar Grove Labyrinth provides an opportunity for all members of the community, including families with children, persons living with a disability, and tourists to enjoy a wonderful and special place in the heart of Thornbury. This Labyrinth is located in an area known as the ‘Old Bayview Campground” near Bayview Park. Without the help of the donations and sponsors, The Blue Mountain Women of 12 would not have been able to complete this beneficial project.

What is a Labyrinth?

A Labyrinth is a single path or unicursal tool that is used to enhance brain activity by promoting personal, psychological and spiritual transformation. A Labyrinth is a clearly defined pathway that finds the centre and returns to the beginning, but is very different from a maze. Unlike a Labyrinth which is set up for relaxation and meditation, a maze is full of dead ends and can lead you to become disoriented. A Labyrinth can be accessed by and is beneficial for all ages and stages in life.

Labyrinths have been around for over 30,000 years and have been found all over the world dating back from the earliest antiquity, but the origins of Labyrinths have been lost over time. There are multiple reasons to experience a Labyrinth and all of its beauty. Walking, meditating and relaxation are just a few examples. Research conducted at the Harvard Medical School’s Mind/Body Medical Institute has found that focused walking meditations are effective at reducing anxiety and creating the ‘relaxation response’. This effect has many long-term health benefits, including lower blood pressure and breathing rates, reduction of chronic pain and insomnia, improved fertility, and many other benefits.

If you need a break from society or even just an escape from your daily routine, take time to let your mind wander and appreciate the peace and quiet the Labyrinth has to offer.
