Fish migrating Spring and from late August to October
The Thornbury Dam, originally built in 1855 has seen many changes over the years and the Thornbury Fishway, known locally as the Fish Ladder, is designed to let fish pass around the Thornbury Dam and once above the dam, they can continue upstream to spawn.
Conveniently located near the Town of The Blue Mountains town hall on highway 26 (Bridge Street East) in the town of Thornbury, and owned and operated by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry Owen Sound field office, the fish ladder offers an excellent view of migrating fish in action.
This fish ladder was the first structure in Ontario to be designed as a “Nature Like Fishway’, that allows fish to swim naturally through the fishway without having to jump, permitting a greater variety of fish species to use it.
Chinook salmon and rainbow trout will begin their fall migration in August through to October and a small number of brown trout will also migrate up the fish ladder in both the spring, and the fall.
Rainbow trout show up in April for the spring migration.
